Episode #295
Do you have a written “Case for Support”?
Here’s how you can create one that’s only one page, and easy to understand and use. This is a terrific tool for helping board members and staff articulate the “case” for your nonprofit organization.
In the video, Tammy Zonker takes you through creating a visual case for support. She has included a PDF that has a sample, a template, and instructions to help you create your own visual case for support. To download the PDF, click the PDF image below (7mb):

Heather Bryant says
When does she use this placemat case for support?
Tammy Zonker says
@HeatherByrant Hi Heather – we used this case for support placemat when making visits with major donors, corporate leaders, campaign cabinet recruitment visits – anytime we wanted to engage people to invest various resources (time, expertise, money, etc.) Of course, the blank template on the reverse side of the placemat is a training tool. The “live” version provided stewardship data to give updates on each of the four initiatives and the overall “promise” or “big, hairy, audacious goal.” It was updated quarterly. Hope that helps!
Chuck Sheketoff says
what is on the back side of the placemat? can you make a pdf of both sides available?
Erin M. Schadt says
What a great tool — thank you for the video and for sharing the PDF! Having tangible pieces like this for board members and staff are invaluable.
Tammy Zonker says
Thanks Erin – I’m happy you received value in the placemat.
Keep me posted on your progress!

Thanks for PDF and video. I will be using these at our Board meeting next week. The resources are timely as we move towards increased mandate and strive to inform/engage the communities we serve.
Jessamyn says
Loved the video, but have a couple of questions:
1) Where does the ‘Why Now’ come into play on the finished place-mat?
2) The ven diagram graphic in the center is very specific to the United Way…what should be here for another organization?
Thanks!
Tammy Zonker says
@Jessamyn, thanks for your questions. As Detroit emerges from bankruptcy, the “why now” is rather implied and emphasized in the dialogue between fundraiser and donor prospect. You may choose to make it more apparent as you design your placemat messaging. For example, I’ve worked with Arts organizations that connect the arts to education and attracting new businesses to their community.
Regarding the ven diagram, again very customizable. I work with an amazing organization in North Dakota who is working to eliminate violence (domestic, community, school-based, etc.) Their graphic is two triangles side-by-side:
Pyramid #1) Their work TODAY: 90% response to violence (bottom up on pyramid) 10% violence prevention through education
Pyramid #2) Their future work/desired state/promise/BHAG (inverted pyramid) 90% violence prevention / 10% response to violence
Hope this helps- and best wishes to you!

THANKS for this Today vs Future pyramid example, and for your video and PDF template. Love the idea of a visual case for support placemat since no one reads anymore!
