Episode #313
Sometimes it’s hard to be creative.
Especially when it comes to sending donors an email.
In this special Valentine’s Day episode, Shanon Doolittle dishes out some creativity and inspiration for you. She’s going to give you a very simple and fun idea for an email you can send to your donors.
BONUS POINTS: You get bonus points if you also use this idea for personalized letters or notes to donors, volunteers, clients, and even staff. 🙂
Shanon’s simple idea is going to have you smiling.
Want even more creative ideas and inspiration? Come meet Shanon in person at this year’s Nonprofit Storytelling Conference.

Love this!!
They’re safe after school
Their homework gets done!
Because of you,
Our kids have fun!
Roses are red, violets are blue, water is clean because of you.
Roses are red, violets are blue, the children are healthy because of you.
Roses are red, violets are blue, we appreciate our donors and that would be you!
Three for three! I love all these, Darrell. Thanks so much for sharing!
Love this. I remembered your message last year and am sending a Valentine’s Card to all my clients and employees. This is such a great way to surprise them with a note of thanks and appreciation at an unexpected time. Thanks for the inspiration Shanon (and Chris!). I love the examples you shared at the end!
Reading this makes my heart do cartwheels, Mary Ann. You’re about to blast a whole lot of love into the world! And hope you get tons back in return.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Shanon you inspire us,
by being awesome you!
Oh, this poem thing really is easy 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration and putting a smile on my face this Monday morning!
And thanks for putting a smile on mine! ((hug))
Spayed and neutered
And eartipped, too
Head bonks and purrs
We appreciate you
Purr-fec-tion! ????
A few years back, our organization ran a campaign to expand the maternity unit at our hospital. After the campaign, as a stewardship activity, I would take pictures of the illuminated green light (indicating that a baby was coming into the world) outside of a patient room ensuring that in the photo, you could see their named gift plaque. I would send it them with the subject line “You had a baby today!” and the email content would be to remind them of the impact of their gift and how grateful we were for their support. Always met with great appreciation.
believably powerful! nice connection
Love. Love. LOVE! I’m doing a “Stewardship Made Simple” presentation in a few weeks, and I’m so going to tell the audience about this and you, Kate. Inspiring!
Thought of another:
When times are good
And times are bad,
You are always there
To give a helping hand.
Here is my Valentine’s love note to our volunteers! We provide free transportation to seniors.
From here to there
and in between,
Because of YOU,
our seniors are seen.
“Our seniors are seen.” That has so many (lovely) meanings, Sherrie! If I was a volunteer and receive this, I’d do backflips of joy.
I work at a school named Providence and our colors are blue and red.
Providence is red
Providence is blue
It’s mission impossible
Without you!
What do you think?
So clever using your school colors! (And convenient too.) I like it. You could also do Providence is red, Providence is blue, our community is powerful, because of people like you. (I may have peeked at your website. ????)
Roses are red
Chrysanthemums are pink
You’re one awesome donor!
That’s what we think!
And below that we said:
Shanon,
You’re generosity is the heart
that keeps us alive.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
???????????? = ????????????
And you are the sweetest! Thanks for making my day, John. ????
You feed the hungry
And give clothing, too
You give hope to our neighbors
Just by being you!
I’m thinking of using this to create a short video for social media. Thank you for the inspiration!
Two hearts up! This is perfecto. If you create a video, send it to me please! I’d love to see it. (And send you a digital heart five!)

Doors are opened, a better future is seen.
Because of people like you, children are free to dream.
All the feels. This gives me goosebumps. Thanks for sharing, Alicia!
Roses are red,
Our Dreamliner is blue.
We are so lucky
To have friends like you!
(For an air and space museum)
Amazing, Louisa! Perhaps I should tweet this to Boeing too? 787, you look so fly, I can’t wait to see you, and give you a try! Happy Valentine’s Day!! ????
Safe and secure in their new home
not a worry in sight – you’ve made their future bright.
I love these! Here’s another:
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Our patients have hope
Because of donors like you!
We provide resources for bladder cancer patients. Thanks so much, Shanon!!
Rose are red, violets blue, this work wouldn’t work, if it wasn’t for YOU!
I LOVE this SO much! Thanks, Shannon for the wonderful idea. We’ve come up with:
Girls are Strong
This is their Hour
Because of You
They’ve learned Girl Power
Pairing it with a photo of a girl in our program. Any ideas for compelling subject lines?
I decided to jump on board and send an email to our donors. I’m getting such nice replies..thank you for the push. It’s making my Valentine’s Day very special!
When people in need ask for help
You give support, without a yelp
They are safe and warm with things to do
All because of people like you!
Chris and Shanon, we totally used this idea in an email we sent today! https://mailchi.mp/supportlpch/7a6qp1h78l-889321?e=5e6e136116 Thank you for your creativity! xo
