Three Donors reveal the #1 factor that motivates them to give

Episode #249

Do you know what motivates your donors to give?

In this week’s video, the following three donors will reveal what motivates them to give.

  • Craig Stewart  – is a trustee and the President of the Apex/Bruce & Jolene McCaw Family Foundation.
  • Ellen Ferguson – she’s been a very generous donor here in Seattle. Interestingly, she used to be a development officer before she became a philanthropist.
  • Mike James – is a veteran broadcast journalist and is now retired.

FYI – This video is part of a project I did called “How Donors Think”.

People who watch “Movie Mondays” submitted questions for me to ask donors. Out of the many many questions people wanted me to ask, I picked 24 of the most requested. So, I filmed the donors answering 24 questions.

I’m giving away these videos as part of a Memorial Day sale. They are being included with each ticket to the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference. If you’d like more information about what questions I asked the donors, and how to watch the other 23 videos, click here.

Do you have any stories on why donors give?  If so, please share them in a comment box under the video.  Thanks.

Great movie! Whenever you have donors’ trust, even starting a new project gives them the comfort of knowing that can “back a winner” with your efforts. Thanks for sharing more of these great interviews!

Donors are not just giving away their hard eared cash just so you (the fundraiser) go away and leave them alone, they are ‘investing’ their money in your project and in the communities you serve. As a result they are looking for a return on their investment. Not a financial one, of course, but a social return on investment and the more an organisation can evidence that return the more attracted the donor will be to invest in your project.
