Episode #247
Would being a famous baseball player help your cause?
When Edgar Martinez retired from Major League Baseball, he and his wife, Holli, started a foundation. They knew they were bucking the odds. The vast majority of foundations, started by famous athletes, end up failing.
It’s been over five years and The Martinez Foundation is stronger than ever…and having a very positive impact on training and supporting teachers in Washington State.
In today’s video, Holli is going to take you through what they did in the early days to build trust with donors. She and Ian Adair, the executive director of The Martinez Foundation, will share with you what they tell their donors today, and how they leverage their resources and exceed donor expectations.
By the way, you may recognize Ian. He’s appeared on Movie Mondays before and is part of the “Donor Retention Project” that I put together with a few other folks.

Excellent message and something I would like to share with board members. How long do you typically leave these videos up or can I locate them on you tube?

We were able to take a donor’s gift to pay for financial services we could not afford, which then made the organization eligible for a grant, which was received. When we told the donor the results, she was delighted.
