Major donor meetings: listening and being flexible

Episode #241

Do your major donors want to give you larger donations?

In today’s video, Beth Ann Locke tells you two different stories about major donor meetings.  The first story is about what she did at a donor meeting that changed a pretty sure $25,000 gift into a million dollar gift.

If you have any tips or stories on how to get the most out of meetings with major donors, please share them in a comment box under the video.  Thanks.

Great outcome, good advice; thank you! And although cultivating good listening skills and building genuine relationships with major gift donors is not always a tidy process; it is the key to a successful outcome. It’s probably also good to underscore the fact that big MONEY usually follows a big VISION since major donors don’t give to needs as much as they give to opportunities. Lack of vision, on the other hand, can sometimes hurt the mission of the organization and can deny the prospective donor the chance to make a really significant difference.

Great advice. So many people jump into the ask because of goals and their own need to report successes instead of working on the donors wishes and timeline. Thank you!

I agree, Kay! It is difficult sometimes to “hold on to the moment,” especially when there are large gifts involved. When we keep the needs of the donor in front of us, in the end we have stronger relationships!
