Episode #290
Are you wealthy?
If not, can you fundraise peer to peer with a wealthy donor?
In this week’s video, Andy Robinson tells a story that illustrates how you can raise money peer to peer…even if you aren’t wealthy yourself.
Please share this video with your board members. It may help them to get over some of that fear they have in asking for money.
If you have any stories or advice around raising money from donors, please share it with everyone else. Leave a comment under the video. Thanks.

This is a fantastic movie on so many levels. For some reason, there are those who put wealthy people in a different category from other potential donors. We’re all the same, if we are passionate about the cause, believe in the organization’s ability to do something about it, and stand behind our commitment with a generous gift of our own, at whatever level.
I’ll never forget sitting with Myra on her living room couch, showing her pictures of a healing garden in the soon-to-be cancer center at the hospital where I worked. After asking her for $150,000 for the garden, she said, “That’s fine, Honey, but I want to give $250,000. What else have you got?” We settled on an elevator. I doubt that I would have gotten that gift if she hadn’t known how committed I was to the project.

Very good video. I think sharing that you have donated to your cause is important. Do not forget to share your time investment as well. How long have you been involved and committed? How do you volunteer your time to the cause? Letting them know that you are involved way beyond getting a pay check from the organization.

I love that story, because the person asking is not a peer or in the same social circle as the donor, necessarily. One other thing I love is the honesty in genuine nature with which the ask is made. There is no hiding anything, and there is a true trust between the solicitor and donor.

I think I’ll be showing this at a board meeting tonight!
