Episode #316
Start your year off strong by sending your year end donors meaningful thank you letters.
So often our thank you letters are less impactful as they could be. Thanking your year end donors well can lead to greater donations in the future.
In today’s video, Steven Screen from Work Less Raise More shows you what a great thank you letter should say.

I like to begin by avoiding the words ‘Thank you.’ Save those for your second paragraph. Begin with a one sentence take-away that relates directly to what the donor hoped to accomplish with their gift. This reminds them why they gave, reassure them the money will be spent as they intended, and makes them feel warm and fuzzy.
“Jimmy will go to bed with a full tummy tonight, because you cared.”

If I put an open ended personal story in the ask letter, I like to complete the story in the thank you. So for example, if in the appeal I wrote, “Debra is still homeless. She needs basic supplies and help accessing services. Can you help?” In the acknowledgement, I’d say “Because of your generosity, Debra was able to get on a wait list for housing. She’s in a shelter, no longer on the cold streets, because of your gift.”
