The new look of board meetings

Are your board members enthusiastic to come to board meetings?

In this week’s movie, Brenda B. Asare from The Alford Group talks about how board meetings are being run differently to better engage their members and to be more effective. She has several ideas you may want to incorporate if you’re not already doing so.

Join Brenda in person as she moderates a panel of funders at the 2016 Nonprofit Storytelling Conference.  The panel includes people from several different foundations, including Cate Fox from the MacArthur Foundation.  They’ll be talking about the important role stories play in the grant making process. You’ll learn what types of stories resonate with funders.  And you’ll be able to ask each of the funders any questions you may have around applying for grants.  To meet the funders in person, click here to get your ticket.

Do you have any tips or stories around engaging board members at board meetings?  If so, please share them in a comment box below the video. Thanks.

Hi Chris, we always either do a check-in with each other, sharing how we are as people in order to get fully present with the meeting, or we do an “ice breaker”with a fun question like “what was your first car?” You’d be surprised at how much fun folks can have talking about first cars! Once our E.D. opened us up with “What is your favorite fruit and why?”. You just can’t be grumpy about fruit. Meaning we were spending the first 10 minutes just laughing and breathing and sharing, and by the time we were settled down we were all in the meeting together, ready to do the work.

We also engage with food! You can never underestimate the power of gathering around a hearty spread!

Great video. I like the idea of end of the meeting evaluation forms to gain feedback and also topics of interest for future board meetings. Does anyone have a good evaluation form they would like to share?

Excellent ideas! Thanks for sharing. I especially like the ‘evaluation’ concept for getting feedback. Great way to gauge the effectiveness of the meeting.
