Helping board members succeed

Episode #268

Do you have a board member that’s “failing”?

At a previous organization, Tim Heimerie had a board member who was having a hard time accomplishing his board member duties. The board member wanted Tim’s help.

In today’s video, Tim from School’s Out Washington, tells you what he did to help the board member.  From that moment on, Tim looked at board members differently.  And because of that shift in thinking, he has been able to help other board members become more satisfied in their roles.  And of course, that also helped him raise more money.

Remember: board members are people. Too often I hear staff say “my board members never do anything.” With those same organizations I’ll hear board members say “staff never give me anything to do.” It’s the staff’s responsibility to lead, support, coach and cheerlead. Would you bring on a staff member, put them in a chair, and just say “go!”? You can’t do that with a board member either. It has to be “go to this… and this is how to do it.”

In an earlier presentation about developing a good board, it was suggested to take each member to lunch, them alone, and find out what is going on with them and how they see things happening with the Board.

This is my ‘resolution’ for 2014 – do a better job working with individual board members. If I am not getting what we need from our board members it is up to me to provide the support to move them in the right direction.
