Creating a mission statement that transforms a community

Episode #112

How do you get people to grab a pitchfork, light the torches and defeat the monster?

In this week’s movie, Lynn Harden tells a terrific story about how a small organization was able to completely turn their fundraising around and change their community in a big way.

Would you believe that all it took was a simple shift in how they explained their mission to people? I’d encourage you to share this week’s movie with your board members and staff, and also any volunteers.

If you have any stories or advice around creating powerful mission statements, please share it with everyone else. Leave a comment under the video. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this video. It is very helpful for where I am with the non-profit I serve. We also create a mission statement for each fundraiser events. It helps to keep us focused during planning the event. Never realized until very recently how important a mission statement is to any endeavor.

This is a very powerful video to me. Lynn’s experience and compassion come through in her presentation, and the message is delivered loud and clear. I like the way she presented the example of the women’s shelter, and emphasized the importance of creating strong mission statements. I feel like I would like to share this with all my friends in the nonprofit community in my community. I will pray for Lynn’s health issues also.
Thank you for presenting a very meaningful video for the nonprofit community.

I appreciated Ms. Harden’s advice, based on an actual case, to communicate in clear, concise and relatively brief messages. In addition to mission statements, conciseness and clarity work well in themes and objectives for capital and comprehensive campaigns. Thank you, Lynn Harden, for sharing.

So agree! Missions statements, to be effective, must come from a place of values; not processes. They must speak to the “why” of your existence, not the “how.” What would happen if you ceased to exist? Thanks for sharing.

I like this video, well done! It serves as a reminder that your mission statement is oftentimes the first impression you leave on a potential donor — do you want them confused? Uncertain? Uninspired? NO!! You want them to jump out of their seats with enthusiasm as they shout “How can I help?” 🙂
